چکیده

We present Regular-SAT, an extension of Boolean Satisfiability based on a class of many-valued CNF formulas. Regular-SAT shares many properties with Boolean SAT, which allows us to generalize some of the best known SAT results and apply them to Regular-SAT. In addition, Regular-SAT has a number of advantages over Boolean SAT. Most importantly, it produces more compact encodings that capture problem structure more naturally. Furthermore, its simplicity allows us to develop Regular-SAT solvers that are competitive with SAT and CSP procedures. We present a detailed performance analysis of Regular-SAT on several benchmark domains. These results show a clear computational advantage of using a Regular-SAT approach over a pure Boolean SAT or CSP approach, at least on the domains under consideration. We therefore believe that an approach based on Regular-SAT provides a compelling intermediate approach between SAT and CSPs, bringing together some of the best features of each paradigm.

Testing XML constraint satisfiability

In a previous paper, we have showed that Hybrid Modal Logic can be successfully used to model semistructured data and provides a simple and well suited formalism for capturing “well typed” references and of course a powerful language for expressing constraint. This paper builds on the previous one and provides a tableau proof technique for constraint satisfiability testing in the presence of sc...

Capturing MSO with One Quantifier

We construct a single Lindström quantifier Q such that FO(Q), the extension of first-order logic with Q has the same expressive power as monadic second-order logic on the class of binary trees (with distinct left and right successors) and also on unranked trees with a sibling order. This resolves a conjecture by ten Cate and Segoufin. The quantifier Q is a variation of a quantifier expressing t...

On the Hardness of SAT with Community Structure

Recent attempts to explain the effectiveness of Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solvers based on conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL) on large industrial benchmarks have focused on the concept of community structure. Specifically, industrial benchmarks have been empirically found to have good community structure, and experiments seem to show a correlation between such structure and the efficienc...

Conflict-driven answer set solving: From theory to practice

We introduce an approach to computing answer sets of logic programs, based on concepts successfully applied in Satisfiability (SAT) checking. The idea is to view inferences in Answer Set Programming (ASP) as unit propagation on nogoods. This provides us with a uniform constraint-based framework capturing diverse inferences encountered in ASP solving. Moreover, our approach allows us to apply ad...

Capturing well typed references in DTDs

Surprisingly enough, there has been few investigations for typing references of semistructured data and XML documents. This paper build on a previous proposal [7] introducing simple schemas with well-typed references and showing that such schemas, called normalized ref-schemas, are expressible as formulas of Hybrid Modal Logic. The aim of the present paper is to extend normalized ref-schemas in...
